Consultant and manager
I am an expert on morphodynamics of rivers and tidal basins, and the transport of cohesive sediments, sand and gravel in these water systems. I have a PhD on this domain and a few years ago I wrote a book on sediment transport and morphology of the Dutch Rhine that has been published in Dutch, English and Chinese.
With respect to water policy I have gained a lot of confidence as an expert on flood risk management, on all aspects of the hazard approach (prevention - preparation - response - recovery). In 2003-2004 I was the project manager of the evaluation of Dutch flood risk management policy, the first evaluation of this policy since the flood disaster of 1953 that killed almost 2000 people. Since this evaluation I have contributed to contingency planning and disaster management for large-scale floods at several occasions and in several ways.
Abroad I have carried out special assignments for the European Committee (Bulgaria), the Dutch government (Surinam), the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (New Orleans) and on behalf of my own consultancy (Korea, Japan).
Over the last (more than) 30 years I have combined consultancy with several management tasks, both project management and (interim) management of departments at the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management.
